I start with flour, sugar, eggs, oil and vanilla
Baking powder, baking soda, and a dash of salt
I mix the wet ingredients, and sift the dry
Preheat the oven and grease the pans
I’ve done this, dozens and dozens of times
Yet each one has a few different tweaks to add
Chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, caramel
Or add cinnamon and grated carrots
No matter how long it takes to bake and decorate
My favorite part of making birthday cakes
Is to see my family member’s face light up
When it’s brought out to the table on a platter
With birthday candle flames dancing on top
